Great blog! I learned a lot — and was relieved of a longstanding concern about the cleanliness of those saturated towels draped over the GymValets at One-to-One. Thanks!

I read about the everest team climb on the treadmill. In my training for stair racing I alternate my simulated race workouts between doing 100 floors on the stair master (1600 steps) and running 1000 ft vertical on a treadmill that has a 15 degree incline. This training along with intervals and cycling has made me one of the fastest 60+ stair racers in the country. Do you know of any other vertical competitions using these pieces of equipment? Stair racing is great but the cost of travelling out of state makes it unlikely that I will be able to do more than 1 or 2 races a year.

Monty: The event I reported and commented on was definitely unique. It was “thought up” as a way to draw attention to the Freemotion booth and specifically the Freemotion line of treadmills at the 2010 IHRSA Trade Show. If any other “vertical” treadmill competitions exist you’d probably be in the same boat as you are for stair-climbing competitions–expensive out of state travel.

Have you ever run the Empire State Building Run-Up? I did it back in the mid-1980s. Back then it was a mass start with 50-75 total racers: My best time was 12:13; my best place was 3rd overall. Please share some of your results!!
